But why on earth doesn't your hosting provider permit irc? I thought it's perfectly okay to use irc...
By the way is there any real difference between VPS and VDS?
I am going to start my own VDS and my hosting provider allows everything except spam (http://firstvds.ru/img/nospam.gif), they even quote irc server as the example of server many of their clients use.

I guess they had some bad experiences re bandwidth or security issues, but I have not investigated this matter.

And I have no idea what VPS and VDS mean, except that they both look Virtual to me.

In my case, irc is not allowed for security reasons.

VDS (Virtual Dedicated Server) and VPS (Virtual Private Server) are the same thing.
